I might read an entire book

without feeling guilty

as I stuff a wad of shut-the-hell-up

into the mouth of the little voice

inside my head that tells me

I am wasting time

I awaken to six inches

The kid in me begs relentlessly
to go out and play
and  finally, with a giggle,
I give in.

I asked the Dr. to not "keep me in stitches."
He laughed and asked how old I was.
"Fifty," I said, "Why?"
"Cuz only someone our age or older
would understand that expression."
I didn't know whether to laugh in return,
or kick him with my good foot.
